Training Run

My lovely wife and I ran the Arts Fest 10K course this evening. We ran together for about the first 6KM. She kicked butt on it. Then I left here at her car, and finished the course. I did the last 4K, which included the dreaded hill up to and along Park Ave., in about 20 minutes. It was a nice negative-split.

Race 5 Summary

Today's race was the Speed-to-Read 5K in scenic Centre Hall. It was a much smaller race than I'd expected: just over 60 runners. I took a look at the course: except for only small hill, it was very flat. I knew it was going to be a fast race, and I was right.

I felt great in the first mile. I wound my way through the pack and found a little empty space. The only real issue was that one of the other runners decided that he would be more aerodynamic without a shirt and without deodorant. Seriously, the guy was 20 yards ahead of me and I could still smell him. Anyway, we came up the the first mile marker really quickly, it seemed. And it was quick: I'd run the first mile, hill and all, in 6:56.

At was then that I made my big mistake. Even though I was feeling good, I make a conscious decision to slow down. I stood up just a little to ease the pace, and I totally lost my rhythm. I was still going at a decent pace, but now it wasn't so easy. Although on the bright side Mr. Stinky did get far enough ahead that I could no longer smell him.

I finally got my legs back just before the end of the 2nd mile. I turned in that one at 7:50. In the back of my head I was thinking that I might be able to finish in under 23 minutes, if I pushed. But I had spent so much energy. With about a half-mile to go, I felt a stitch developing. There was no way that was going to stop me though: it was all downhill from where I was. Still, I held off on my closing kick just a little longer than I should have.

I finished in 23:14, so better than my race goal, and just a bit shy of a 7:30-mile pace. That was good for 33rd place (out of 62 runners), but it was still my best time this year by more than 30 seconds.

training log

I'm gearing up for the Speed-to-Read 5K on Saturday, but also for the Arts Fest 10K in just over 3 weeks. Yesterday I ran just over 7km in about 41 minutes, and then today I ran 5K in about 26 minutes.

My goal for Saturday is to get under 23:30. If the course is as flat as I remember, I'll try for a 7:30-mile pace. That's a finish time of about 23:12.

Papa needs a new pair of shoes

My lovely wife and I went to Rapid Transit yesterday, because I had worn out my running shoes. I got a new set of Saucony's Omega 4: very light, very stiff. Then while she was getting fitted I got some new gear. Click here for some eye candy.
Then we went for a run around the golf course (the bike path loop). It was a lovely day to get out there, so we did!

Training Log

I completed two laps of the campus loop this evening. Actually, with all the construction on campus, I wound up running more like 11KM. I managed to run through a stitch at about the 6KM mark, and at 8KM my legs were dying. But I got through, though not without a little bit of pain.

training log

I ran a figure-eight around the golf course the evening, starting and ending at Radio Park. I think that this is about 5.5 miles, but who knows?
I did it in about 47 minutes, and I still had a kick at the end. So yea, me!

Training day

First off, congrats to my lovely wife who successfully ran 5 kilometers. Yea, Sue!

We had to run indoors at the IM because of all this damn rain. Sue ran with me for the first 5K. Then I rested about two minutes, then I ran another 5K. Today's run was about distance, not time. But I completed it, and really didn't feel too tired afterwards.

What's next

My next goal is to run the Arts Festival 10K in early July. I've never run more than 5 miles in a single shot before, so I'll need to take my training up a notch. My plan for the next few weeks is to run two laps of my favorite 5K courses: one at a slow pace, and then at a quicker pace. So those of you who claim to want to run with me, now's the time.
